Handling Your Letter from the IRS
Follow directions. Your letter from the IRS will have specific instructions about what you need to do. Pay close attention to the return mailing address as well as your response deadline. Keep copies of any correspondence you have with the IRS as you may need to refer to it later.
There are options for resolution. Many people choose to personally resolve minor tax issues such as an inaccurate address or Social Security numbers. However, if you want to dispute the IRS notice or need help with more complex open tax issues, working with a tax accountant is recommended.
